Lisbon Travel Guide by You, Me, Lunch & Travel

This Guest Post was submitted by You Me Lunch & Travel – @bri.youmetravel

Lisbon is one of those places that just feels good. The people, food and the streets are so lively and warm, that you feel at home. Perched in the southern region of Europe, Lisbon is a vibrant city with a whole lot of soul. Sardines, Pastel de Nata, great nightlife and the friendly Portuguese people make Lisbon so special. Similar to San Francisco, The City Of Seven Hills, is full of steep streets and colorful homes.

STAY

Yes! Hostel, twice voted Best Hostel In The World, is the absolute best place to stay in Lisbon. If you’re a budget traveler, which I’m guessing you are, Yes! should be your pick. It is affordable, comfortable and personable. Most hostel beds are hard and annoying to sleep on. At Yes! Hostel the beds are comfy and the rooms have modern decor + furniture.

The best part about the hostel is the friendly service. Hostel employees know every guest by name, which was the perfect touch to the experience.

YML&T TIP: Stick around for a Portuguese dinner every night for 10 Euros with unlimited alcohol. Thank me later.

EAT

Pastel de Nata.

Don’t skip over this traditional Portuguese tart. It’s an egg-custard tart, with a flaky crust and a slight sweetness. You can literally find them everywhere (corner

shops). The best I had was from Casa Brasileira.

Time Out Market

Time Out is every food lover’s dream. There’s 24 restaurants, 8 bars and 12 shops all under one roof and its worthy every bite. We had everything from Mexican and steak to duck. The venue also doubles as a concert hall, hosting

huge shows throughout the year. If you go to Lisbon, you have to go to Time Out!

Cantinho Gourmet

This local cheese and wine shop is located in Sintra and is totally worth the trek across town. Come here to taste authentic port wines and fresh cheese. They even have carry-on sized wine to take back home.

DO

Ride the tram.

Would it be Lisbon without riding the tram? Probably not. The tram is an important part of the transportation system in Lisbon. It helps to navigate the city when you’re new to town. Tram 28 is the famous tourist tram that goes around all of Lisbon, passing iconic monuments.

YML&T TIP: Tram 28 is famous and everyone is trying to get a ride on it. Do yourself a favor and ride the tram very early in the morning, to avoid the midday rush.

Catch the sunrise.

I promise it’s worth waking up at 7 AM to catch the sunrise over The City Of Seven Hills. It’s a breathtaking view over the red roofs of Lisboa. If you get lucky, the sunrise is even better on those less foggy days. Regardless, roll out of bed, grab coffee and hike up towards Castelo de Sao Jorge (Opens at 9 AM) where

you’ll find a few lookout spots great for sunrise or sunset.

Visit Pena Palace in Sintra

Escape to mythical Sintra for castle views and old town vibes. We visited Pena Palace and a local wine & cheese shop. Pena Palace has breathtaking views overlooking Portugal that will make you want to move there ASAP. Keep in mind that it’s a tourist attraction, so there will be a lot of people. Everywhere. Get there early!

YML&T: Tours are usually lame and I wouldn’t suggest them, but check out

Lisbon Riders or We Hate Tourism Tours for cool tours that won’t bore you.

Day Trip To Cascais

Cascais is the beautiful seaside town just beyond Lisbon. It’s the perfect getaway from the city life. Cascais is filled with tiny shops, gelaterias and waterfront views. I even saw people jet skiing there! Getting from Lisbon to Cascais is an easy 30 minute train ride away.

Lisbon was nothing short of a dream. It’s right by the river, has a great local cuisine and the nightlife is lively. What’s not to love? Lisbon is a place that you go not knowing what to expect and leave completely in love with the city.

What’s your favorite thing about Lisbon?
